Microbiome as a Mechanism in Understanding Allergies & Asthma Diagnoses

The study examines whether certain bacterial genus or genre are associated with diagnoses of asthma or allergies. Through this project, we developed a Bacterial Composition Exposure Profile [BCEP] based on an individual's gut bacteria for a sample of nearly 17 thousand participants. Furthermore, the study extends the concept of a BCEP to encompass the exposure profile of cohorts that are made up of stratified study participants to account for biological, environmental, or pathological differences. This MESc research has the potential to elucidate whether Asthmatic patients have a distinguishable Bacterial Composition Exposure Profile (BCEP) from non-asthmatic patients; if patients that share the same Birthplace (Country) have a similar BCEP profile. And finally, we examine whether BCEPs of Patients diagnosed with any of the three allergy types, Food Allergies, Seasonal Allergy, (Other) Allergy classifications, are more similar than BCEPs of Patients that are negatively diagnosed with Allergy.
