Norms, Networks, and Meat Consumption in India

India has the lowest per capita meat consumption on the planet, which is partially due to strong cultural norms around vegetarianism in some segments of society. The FAO predicts modest increases in meat eating over the next decade as income increases. We hypothesize that cultural norms are also shifting in complicated ways that may lead to much higher meat consumption, and we attempt to identify some of the drivers of those shifts. Given that meat has a much higher carbon footprint than other foods, these shifts could be an important driver of future global carbon emissions.
